New Program Year
The new 2022-2023 4-H program year began September 1 and will go through August 31. A new program year means new enrollment forms. If you haven’t already done so, be sure to complete one to stay on our mailing list. All youth and volunteers must have a current enrollment on file to participate in 4-H clubs and events. Enrollment forms can be found on our website at https://daviess.ca.uky.edu/4h-enrollment .
Achievement Applications
The 4-H Achievement Program is intended to recognize 4-H participants with outstanding accomplishments and to provide an incentive for youth to increase their knowledge, skills, and abilities. It is a comprehensive program spanning the entire career of the 4-H’er, awards points for outside efforts and interests, and encourages growth and development by awarding high points at multi-county, state, and national levels. As youth work their way through the achievement levels they become eligible for scholarships to teen summit, teen conference, and eventually college scholarships. There will be an information session on October 20 at 6:00 p.m. for anyone who wants to learn more about the program or those who have filled one out and have questions. See the enclosed flyer for eligibility of each level. Applications are due November 1.
National 4-H Week: National 4-H Week is October 2-8, 2022. Stop by the Extension Office to take a picture in our 4-H Week foyer, guess the number of candies in the candy jar, and play 4-H Week Bingo. The Bingo Card will go out via email and posted on Facebook on October 2.
We have a new website!
We have been working a new website for Daviess County Cooperative Extension. It will go live on September 30. Be sure to check it out using the same address — https://daviess.ca.uky.edu. Please note, any specific links to our website listed in this newsletter will not be accessible until October 1.
Reid’s Apple Fest
The Reid’s Orchard Apple Festival will be October 22-23 at Reid’s Orchard. 4-H has a booth selling bottled drinks and we need folks to volunteer! The blocks are approximately 3 hours each. Minimum age to volunteer is 9. You can sign up online at https://bit.ly/reids-sign-up.
Speech Contest
The Daviess County 4-H Speech Contest will be held in November. The registration form can be found on our website at https://daviess.ca.uky.edu/speech-contest and is due by October 14. See the enclosed flyer for more details.
Piggy Bank Contest
The Kentucky Saves 2023 Piggy Bank Contest is a creative way for youth to learn the importance of saving money and reducing debt. The contest, which celebrates Kentucky Saves Week (February 27—March 3, 2023), is open to youth enrolled in kindergarten through twelfth grade at any public, private, or homeschool within the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Winners will have their names, grades, counties, and winning piggy bank displayed in the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort during February 2023. TSC Paper Clovers
The Tractor Supply Company Paper Clover Campaign will run October 5-16, 2022. Donations from this campaign help send kids in their state to 4-H Camp and other leadership experiences. TSC will match donations made when using a TSC credit card. When shoppers choose to donate at check-out, they can select the amount they would like to donate!
Daviess County 4-H Kick Off Night
4-H Kick-Off Night was a HUGE success! Thanks to all of the club leaders, 4-H members, and volunteers for helping put on a fun event. Nearly 150 people came to learn more about 4-H! **Open the pdf of this newsletter to see pictures**
Shooting Sports
The Daviess County 4-H Shooting Sports has two teams—Crushers (trap shooting) and Marksmen (air rifle, 22 rifle and bb rifle). Both teams competed in shooting matches over the summer ending with the Kentucky 4-H State Shooting Competition in September. **Open the pdf of this newsletter to see pictures**

Teen Leadership
The 4-H Teen Leadership Academy is a program designed to enhance leadership skills both inside and outside of 4-H. TLA will provide youth with many opportunities to strengthen leadership skills and allow them to be an important part of their community’s positive development. Teens in Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, Union, and Webster Counties meet once a month from September to April covering a range of topics to assist with leadership development and community awareness. Daviess County has 5 teens participating this year: Lillian Connor, Colton Hardy, Isaac Heisdorffer, Juliann Heisdorffer, and Kelsey Splittorff.
4-H Teen Board
The Teen Board will not meet in October as their meeting falls during Fall Break. The next meeting will be November 14 at 4:30 p.m. at the Daviess County Extension Office. As a reminder the Teen Board is for any high school-aged 4-H’er.
Dairy Goat Club
Some of the cards handed out at the 4-H Kick-Off Night had the wrong meeting dates for Goat Club. The correct dates are October 27, November 15, and January 12.
Recipe: Easy Chicken Pot Pie
Ingredients
· ⅔cup frozen mixed vegetables, thawed
· 1 cup cooked chicken, cut into bite-size pieces
· 1 (10 3/4 ounce) can low fat, condensed, cream of chicken soup
· 1 cup reduced fat baking mix
· ½ cup milk
· 1 egg
Directions
1. Wash hands and any cooking surfaces
2. Pre-heat oven to 400°F
3. Mix vegetables, chicken, and soup in ungreased, 9-inch pie plate
4. Stir baking mix, milk, and egg in a mixing bowl with fork until blended. Pour over vegetables, chicken, and soup mixture in pie plate
5. Bake 30 minutes or until golden brown
6. Let cool 5 minutes and serve
Make it a Meal
Serve with baked apples, lettuce wedge salad, low-fat yogurt, and water!
